Privacy Policy
How Calgary Biztech handles data: what Google Analytics collects, the cookies used, cross-border processing, and how to opt out.
Quick answer: This site runs Google Analytics and nothing else. No ads, no accounts, no forms, no data sales, and no reader database. This policy explains exactly what happens when you read Calgary Biztech, in plain terms.
This policy applies to the Biztech network, which publishes Canada Biztech, Calgary Biztech, Edmonton Biztech, Toronto Biztech, and Vancouver Biztech. Each edition is covered by its own copy of this policy, because the editions do not all collect the same things. This copy describes Calgary Biztech at calgarybiztech.com.
What Does Calgary Biztech Collect?
Calgary Biztech has no accounts, no login, no newsletter, no comment system, and no forms of any kind. There is nothing on this site that asks you for your name, email address, phone number, or company. We hold no database of readers.
The one thing that does collect information is Google Analytics 4, which runs on this site under measurement ID G-Z9H8R54J83. It records how pages are used so we can see which guidance is worth maintaining.
Through Google Analytics, the following is collected when you visit:
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Pages viewed, time on page, and the order pages were visited in | Understanding which guidance readers actually use |
| Approximate location, at the level of city, region, and country | Knowing which regional edition serves which readers |
| Device type, screen size, browser, and operating system | Making sure pages work on the devices readers use |
| Referring website or search engine | Understanding how readers find the site |
| A randomly generated identifier stored in a cookie | Recognising a repeat visit from the same browser |
We do not receive your name, email address, or any identifier that names you personally, and we have no way to connect this data to a specific individual.
What Cookies Are Used?
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one browser from another | 2 years |
_ga_Z9H8R54J83 | Google Analytics | Maintains the analytics session state | 2 years |
This site also stores a colorTheme value in your browser’s local storage when you choose light or dark mode. That value stays in your browser, is never transmitted to us or to anyone else, and is not a cookie. Clearing your browser storage removes it.
No advertising cookies, no retargeting pixels, no social media trackers, and no fingerprinting scripts run on this site.
What Happens to Your IP Address?
Your IP address is transmitted to Google as part of the analytics request and is used to derive the approximate location described above.
Google publishes a commitment that Analytics does not log or store individual IP addresses for visitors from the EU, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. That commitment is specific to those regions and Google does not extend it to Canadian visitors. We state this plainly because many privacy policies claim the protection applies everywhere, and it does not. If your IP address being processed by Google is a concern, the opt-out options below stop the collection entirely.
Where Is the Data Processed?
Google Analytics data is processed on Google infrastructure outside Canada, including in the United States. Information stored outside Canada is subject to the laws of the country it is held in, and may be accessible to courts and law enforcement in that country. Google’s handling of the data is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.
How Long Is It Kept?
Google Analytics retains user-level and event-level data for a maximum of 14 months on a standard property, after which it is deleted automatically. Aggregate reports, which contain no individual-level data, may persist beyond that.
We keep no copies of analytics data outside Google Analytics.
How Do You Opt Out?
These work today and none of them require contacting us:
- Block analytics entirely. Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, which stops Analytics on every site you visit.
- Block or clear cookies. Every major browser lets you block third-party cookies or clear existing ones. Doing so removes the identifier described above.
- Use a content blocker. Most privacy extensions and several browsers block Google Analytics by default. The site works normally with analytics blocked, because nothing on it depends on tracking.
- Control what Google holds. Google My Activity lets you review and delete data associated with your Google account.
Nothing on this site is withheld from readers who block analytics. There is no tracking wall and no reduced experience.
What We Never Do
To be specific, on every edition of the Biztech network:
- We do not sell, rent, or trade any data about you. There is no data to sell.
- We do not run advertising networks or accept behavioural advertising.
- We do not use retargeting pixels from Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, or anyone else.
- We do not build reader profiles or score readers for commercial value.
- We do not share data with the companies and software vendors covered in our articles.
- We do not accept payment to change what an article says. Commercial relationships that could affect coverage are disclosed on the page where they apply, as described in our editorial policy.
Links to Other Sites
Articles link out to vendor documentation, source code repositories, government pages, and other third-party sites. Once you follow a link, you are on that operator’s site and their privacy practices apply. We have no control over and take no responsibility for what other sites collect.
Your Rights in Canada
The federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and provincial legislation including Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act, give you rights over personal information an organization holds about you, including the right to know what is held, to access it, and to ask for corrections.
Those rights are worth stating clearly here: we hold no personal information about you. There are no accounts, no forms, no mailing list, and no reader database on any edition of the Biztech network. There is no file with your name on it, so there is nothing for us to retrieve, correct, or delete.
The one place data about your visit exists is inside Google Analytics on the editions that run it. That data is not identifiable to us, and the practical controls over it sit with you and with Google, through the opt-out mechanisms listed above and through Google’s own privacy controls.
If you believe an organization has mishandled your personal information, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada accepts complaints and explains the process.
Children
The Biztech network publishes business technology guidance for people making purchasing decisions at work. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the age of majority.
Changes to This Policy
When this policy changes materially, the reviewed date at the top of the page changes with it, and the substance of the change is noted on our corrections page. We do not quietly revise policies.
Contacting Us
A dedicated privacy contact address for the Biztech network is being established and will be published here once it is live.
In the meantime, the practical controls described in this policy are all self-serve and work without contacting anyone: analytics opt-out, cookie clearing, content blockers, and Google’s own account controls. Because no edition holds a reader database, there is no access or deletion request that could only be fulfilled by contacting us.
Corrections to any article can be raised through the process on our corrections page.
