Odoo Manufacturing for Alberta Shops
What Odoo Manufacturing actually ships, cited to the documentation, what is missing, and the six things to test in a demo before you commit.
Quick answer: Odoo Manufacturing covers bills of materials, work centres, work orders, subcontracting, quality checks and lot traceability natively, and that combination handles most Alberta SMB manufacturing without custom code. The gaps that matter are nesting, which does not exist, and scheduling depth, which is worth testing against your own constraints instead of taking on trust.

For an Alberta SMB manufacturer, that list covers a great deal. The combination of subcontracting for outside processing, scrap on the BOM, and lot traceability for heat numbers is specifically what a fabrication or pressure equipment shop needs, and none of it requires custom development.
What Is Not There
Nesting does not exist. We searched the complete Odoo 19.3 documentation set across several distinct queries and it returns zero results. Sheet nesting stays in dedicated software that feeds quantities back. This matters commercially because estimating and fabrication vendors do promise it, so ask for a demonstration on your own sheet sizes and part mix before believing any claim to the contrary.
Canadian payroll is absent. Odoo publishes payroll localizations for 24 countries and Canada is not among them as of version 19.3. What We Could Not Verify
Being explicit here, because the honest answer is more useful than a confident one.
Scheduling depth. We could not confirm from the documentation how far Odoo goes on finite capacity scheduling against constrained work centres with sequence-dependent setup. General business systems are typically weaker here than dedicated planning products. Treat it as a demo question against your own constraints instead of an assumption in either direction.
Configure-to-order complexity. Product variants are documented and a variant is a different thing from a rules-driven configurator handling dependent options and exclusions. If your product has genuine option logic, test it with your most awkward configuration.
The general point holds beyond Odoo. Any vendor claim about your specific edge cases is worth converting into a live demonstration on your own data.
The Tier Question
Most manufacturers end up on Custom instead of Standard, and it is worth pricing that way from the beginning.
Standard excludes Odoo Studio, multi-company, and external API access. Manufacturers hit at least one of those sooner than expected, and it is usually the API, because connecting estimating software, nesting output, or shop floor hardware requires it. Discovering this after budgeting for Standard is an unpleasant conversation.

What to Test in a Demo
Vendors demo clean linear builds. Everything expensive happens at the edges, so bring these:
- Your deepest bill of materials, with the options and substitutions you actually use.
- A job that goes out for galvanising or heat treat and comes back, and check where the cost lands and when.
- A finished serial traced back to the heat numbers of the material that went into it.
- A work order recorded at operation level, on the hardware your floor would actually use, in the building.
- A scrap event mid-build, and see what happens to the cost.
- A rush job that jumps the queue, and see what the schedule does to everything behind it.
